Think you can’t afford a vacation this year? This is one of my top ten ideas for fun and relaxation close to home.
Take a tour of your State Capitol building. This is something everyone should do at least once. This may be a bit of a drive depending on where you live, but will be worth it. If you have children spend a few days before the trip helping them study your state. After the tour, encourage them to talk, ask questions and perhaps write an essay.

Go Fishin’! Fishing really isn’t about fish. For many people fishing is about getting away from it all.
Easier before cell phones, but still possible. Find a quiet place and leave the phone at home. Don’t buy expensive gear, just gather up basic equipment and go.

Discover your State Parks and Recreation Areas.
In my state an annual $25 park permit gets everyone in your vehicle into the state parks. We have a wonderful variety of state parks including parks that cater to campers, fishing enthusiasts, nature lovers, hikers, history and archeology buffs, and even vacationers who want a few amenities.
One of our favorite brief escapes is a hike followed by dinner with a view at the picnic area in a State Park.
Get acquainted with your state parks. You may be missing wonderful recreational opportunities.

Enjoy local fairs, festivals and seasonal celebrations.
Most cities and even small towns have at least one. Whether a holiday celebration, flower, harvest or music festival, event honoring a local historical figure, Renaissance Faire or chicken festival these can be quite fun.
Some offer free admission while others charge. If you going outside prepare for weather conditions and don’t forget sunscreen. Take the family, leave the phone at home. Have fun, you are on vacation!
