Health as a Practice

The Importance of Rest

This was originally posted as a part of my Healthy Living A-Z series and was title R is for rest. I am re posting it here because I think it is a reminder we could all use.

No matter how hard we try we cannot ignore the need of body, mind and spirit for rest. If we do not take time to rest and renew sooner or later the universe will intervene. For me this is when the car breaks down, the computer crashes, the electricity shuts down, or if all else fails to get my attention, I become physically ill unable to do much of anything.

First we must be sure we are getting enough sleep. The body must have sleep to recharge and repair itself. But rest can also involve meditation, spending time in nature, listening to music and other activities that are fun, joyful and help us reconnect with the Creator.

Set aside one day each week to rest, relax, recharge and reconnect. Turn off the “electronic devices.” Resist temptation to turn every activity into work, money or an opportunity for “success” and just be. Listen to the universe and you may receive the greatest inspiration yet.

Enjoy the Journey

“Wellness encompasses a healthy body, a sound mind, and a tranquil spirit. Enjoy the journey as you strive for wellness.” ― Laurette Gagnon Beaulieu

I just had to add a few thoughts about today’s quote. I believe it is always important to enjoy the journey. But in our culture we often seem to think that anything worthwhile has to be difficult and perhaps even painful.

That can backfire on us, especially if we apply it to healthy living. If we see a healthy lifestyle as punishment, then that is what it will become. If we see a healthy lifestyle a a life of deprivation and not being able to enjoy life, it will become that as well. We will also not last very long.

I often hear older people say things like, “I know I should eat better, walk, etc. but I don’t want to. I want to enjoy my life.” Sometimes I want to pull a Dr. Phil and say, “And how’s that working for you?” But I don’t. You see unfortunately most of the people who say that are not enjoying their life. Many live with pain and serious illness which might have been prevented or improved with a healthier lifestyle.

Bob and I can both say that a healthy lifestyle does not have to be one of deprivation. We eat well and our food is quite tasty. We enjoy life and plan to continue to do so for many years to come.

So as you start out on the road to healthy living, remember 4 things.

  1. Don’t go overboard. Making a bunch of drastic changes all at once will set you up for failure.
  2. Don’t consider a healthy lifestyle punishment. Find ways to make it enjoyable.
  3. Health and wellness is not just about the physical body. A balance of health of body, mind and spirit is important.
  4. You are on the road to a better quality of life. It will be worth it.

Life is good. Remember that. This life is not meant to be all about suffering. We can have a better life by living a healthy life in body, mind and spirit. And finally, please don’t forget to enjoy the journey.
