The Spiritual Life

“The spiritual life is not a life before, after, or beyond our everyday existence. No, the spiritual life can only be real when it is lived in the midst of the pains and joys of the here and now.” – Henri Nouwen

Being an Artist is About Who You Are, Not What You Do

Today’s artwork is A Little Blue, Copyright 2015 by R.A. Robbins

Genie’s Note: I found this old article in my email. It appears to have been published on one of the blogs we have had over the years I can’t seem to find it. But this short but sweet article pretty much sums up how I see myself as an artist. Enjoy!

Being an artist is about who you are, not what you do. I believe that with all my heart.  No matter what I am doing, I am an artist.  Being an artist and living creatively is about seeing the world in a different way than anyone else sees it.  That’s what makes us seem a little odd to other folks (and makes them seem a little odd to us).

So whether I am writing a book or article, working on a new recipe, playing with my cats (my girls), meditating, enjoying nature or studio time I am an artist.  When my job involved working with adults with developmental disabilities (a field where creativity is desperately needed but not really wanted) you guessed it — still an artist.

This is what my high school art teacher taught me.  I didn’t get it right away, but now I do.

Living the creative life is not always easy.  People tend to feel threatened by new ideas and new ways of seeing and doing things, and we all know when people feel threatened things can turn ugly.  Even in the art world there is a tendency to focus on technique and skills rather than artistic vision, but we carry on.

I believe artists have a responsibility to help the world see possibilities.  I take this responsibility very seriously.  My purpose as an artist is to allow a little glimpse into that world that only artist’s see — a chance to see the world through an artist’s eyes.

Only Two Instructions

“Sometimes I think there are only two instructions we need to follow to develop and deepen our spiritual life: slow down and let go.” – Oriah Mountain Dreamer

Life in Six Words — Again and Again

The original Life in Six Words recieved what I believe is the highest number of comments here on Espirational. Then I decided to try it again with More Six Word Memoirs.

So why not try it one more time. How would I sum up my life in six words?

Taking detours from the simple life.

Yep, that’s me. Making life harder than it needs to be, even in “retirement.”

What is your life in six words? Please feel free to share in the comments.

No Other Teacher

“You have to grow from the inside out. None can teach you, none can make you spiritual. There is no other teacher but your own soul.” – Swami Vivekananda

The Friday Affirmation

I am calm, in control, and in harmony with everything around me.

A Spiritual Understanding

“It isn’t until you come to a spiritual understanding of who you are – not necessarily a religious feeling, but deep down, the spirit within – that you can begin to take control.” – Oprah Winfrey

Still Fighting Against?

Genie’s Note: In 2017 I wrote “Fighting Against or Living For?” The original post was about my experiences as an “older” adult. But the world has changed since 2017 and in revisiting this I want to broaden it out a bit.

We live in a time where everyone seems to be blaming someone else for the problems in our world. Here in the U.S. Republicans blame Democrats and Democrats blame Republicans. Christian Evangelicals are quick to blame those not on their side for all the evils n the world and of course non-evangelicals are quick to throw the blame back. The list of specfic issues dividing us goes on and on.

The next step from blame then becomes fighting against the perceived evil doers who are destroying our country. This can be done through political action, protests and sometimes actual physical violence or even talk of actual civil war.

I have to admit I get caught up in the mess of it all sometimes. I frequently have to remind myself that instead of fighing agaist I am called to live for something greater. This may seem like a very slight shift, but if we look at it closely, the difference is huge

Are we fighting against the negative forces in the world today or are we living for light, love, peace, acceptance, and creating a better world for all?

What are you fighting against?  How can you flip that into living for something greater?

We’ll Change the World

“My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.” —Jack Layton
