Work at Peace

“It isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it.” —Eleanor Roosevelt

Peace of Mind and Spirit

“You should feel beautiful and you should feel safe. What you surround yourself with should bring you peace of mind and peace of spirit.”Stacy London

Your Inner Peace

“Do not let the behavior of others destroy your inner peace.” Dalai Lama

Never Be in a Hurry

“Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset.”Saint Francis de Sales

A Universal Thing

You who are journalists, writers, citizens, you have the right and duty to say to those you have elected that they must practice mindfulness, calm and deep listening, and loving speech. This is universal thing, taught by all religions. Thich Nhat Hanh (RelatedPeace Is Every Step, Amazon book)

Today’s quote is one of those things that is worthy of being taped to the bathroom mirror. We need to read these words every day.

During these turbulent times we see people being encouraged by political and religious leaders to behave badly. Practices such as mindfulness, calm and deep listening and loving speech are being ridiculed and people who center their lives around them are called “losers.” But our divided country needs leaders who will stand for and live by these values.

As we approach an important election in the U.S. we need to remember character matters. The angry, hateful and sometimes nonsensical words coming out of former president Trump make me sad. They also leave me puzzled. How can we even consider this man as the leader of our country?

We must convey to our leaders that we expect them to practice mindfulness, calm and deep listening, and loving speech. Angry words, vitriol. lies and ridicule will not bring our country together. Those of us who follow a spiritual path must embody these practices. This is the time to shine our light.

The Friday Affirmation

“Breathing in, I calm body and mind. Breathing out, I smile. Dwelling in the present moment I know this is the only moment,” Thich Nhat Hahn Being Peace.

Human Suffering Anywhere

Human suffering anywhere concerns men and women everywhere. —Elie Wiesel

The Biggest Challenge

“The biggest challenge or biggest crisis knocking on the doors of humankind is fear and intolerance.” — Kailash Satyarhi (Nobel Peace Prize 2014)

Love Comes More Naturally

No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite. — Nelson Mandela

Mastering our Thoughts

Peace is not achieved by controlling nations but mastering our thoughts. — John Harricharan

You had to know I couldn’t resist commenting on this one. Trying to control nations, political parties or any other people will not bring peace. We must learn to control our own thoughts. From our thoughts come the actions that create the world. We bring about war or peace by what we think and believe. How will you begin to master your thoughts?
