It’s a new beginning. What do you want to see on December 31st when you look back on this year? When we think about change, we can feel overwhelmed. No matter what your goals are, it’s best to break them down into tiny steps. Each step taken feels like a success, and motivates us to keep going.
* Acknowledge yourself for each tiny step taken. Anchor each tiny step to an established habit, for maximum success.
* If you’re unsure about the change, restrict the new behavior to 30 days and see how you feel at that point.
* Remind yourself of the challenges that you’ve previously overcome.
* Find an accountability partner – someone who will support you and be your cheerleader.
If you become discouraged, remind yourself of why you want to accomplish the goal – what’s your underlying passion or the underlying value that you strongly believe in?

Genie’s Note: Our Follower of the Month for November is Sally Cronin of Smorgasboard. Sally has a wonderful personal story of personal growth and lifestyle/attitude change.
Twenty years ago I weighed 330lbs and eventually dragged myself along to the doctor for the usual lecture about my weight. By this time in my life I had been every size under the sun and had also half-completed nearly every diet available. On this occasion, the doctor who had run some tests, told me that unless I lost the extra weight I would not survive past my 40’s.
That was a wake-up call and a very loud one too. I changed my life around from that point on. I spent the next two years studying both nutrition and the human body so that I could design an eating plan that would work and I would stick to. My life is very different now and I love the fact that my experience enables me to help others in the work that I do.
But, more importantly my message is this. Do not leave issues, whether they are health, relationship or work until you are almost beyond help. If you have a problem there is always someone to listen and advise. And if family and friends are not an option there is massive amounts of information on the Internet to help you find an expert locally who can.

Our August Follower of the Month is Cathy Mounts of Foodradical.wordpress.com with a wonderful healthy cooking idea.
There is something about being out in the woods that brings me a sense of peace. I can relax, I can be wondrous and thoughtful. I can find healing and gratitude. I can come back to the city feeling refreshed and renewed.
I have found tin foil pouches to be my number one favorite way to create delicious campfire meals, just the way I like them! That smoky, campy taste is undeniably delightful.
Using heavy duty tin foil, pull off a sheet that gives you enough coverage for folding (about 12″x12″), fill with your favorite veggies, layering with the veggies that cook the longest on the bottom. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with your choice of spices. Fold the foil and pinch edges to create a pouch. Set on campfire grill once flames are lower and wood is hot. Give it a shake every few minutes. Usually cooks up quickly!! Relax and enjoy.

Three years ago I lost my job at the same time that my now 21 year-old daughter was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Unable to find another job offering the part-time hours that I could cope with and my daughter, who was suffering from crippling social anxiety (a common problem for ‘Aspies’), needing my help, I became not only Mum but her full-time carer. But deep inside I struggled with the rejection of being laid-off and I began to feel old and useless, insignificant, washed-up.
As I prayed about it, one day I read this by novelist George Eliot: ‘It’s never too late to become what you might have been.’ I realised that I could use this time to pursue my life-long dream of becoming a writer. The self-belief took a long time coming but today I can say something I thought I would never say: ‘I am a published writer.’

A Woman and a Woolly Necked Stork
She was a wonderful woman, full of compassion and a good friend. One morning she stepped out of her kitchen and there standing in the doorway of her lounge, was a Woolly Necked Stork. She thought she was dreaming, but the Stork was as real as the porridge she had just made for herself.
Why had the Stork come? Was it a sign? Was it an omen of some sort? Was something good or bad about to happen? Merle (not her real name) being a practical woman, knew it was none of these. The bird had arrived because it was hungry. The drought was taking its toll. Birds do strange things in times of drought. Merle turned and went back in to the kitchen and came out with a piece of cheese. Giving its wings a shake the stork stepped forward and pecked the cheese from her hand. An unforgettable moment for Merle.
And so started a year- long relationship with at least two visits a week. Then, as sudden as the Woolly Neck arrived, she stopped coming and never returned. Something of Merle departed as well.
Eventually Merle went and lived in England. It was hard for her to leave. Just before leaving she composed a poem about her visiting stork. I was deeply touched by a haunting and beautiful last line, “Will the Woolly Necked Stork remember me.” Merle died in December last year.
I often think of those two, Merle and the Woolly Neck. I wonder if those moments of meeting are inscribed on some universal and invisible hard drive just waiting to be experienced again. I can’t believe that moments like those are ever lost.

Our February Follower of the Month is Carrie of Gluten Free Fabulous. She is sharing her asparagus salad recipe with us. Carrie has a great attitude and wonderful recipes using lots of fresh seasonal ingredients. You will want to visit her even if you don’t eat gluten free.
I’ve always liked asparagus, however I either grill it – or broil it. I wanted to find a way to have it raw and taste delicious, and I’m quite happy with how this turned out! It’s fresh, simple and healthy. Asparagus is packed full of vitamin K, and fiber. After switching to a gluten free diet I had to become more aware of fiber and where I was getting it from. The bell pepper adds vitamin C and vitamin A, and adds some great flavor.
1 bunch of asparagus, thinly sliced
1/4 of a red onion finely diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
salt and pepper, to taste
feta cheese, to taste
Wash and remove the bottom of the asparagus stems. Thinly slice the stalks and the tips and place into a large bowl. Dice up the red pepper, removing the seeds, and add to the bowl. Dice up the onion real fine, and add to the bowl. Sprinkle a bit of salt and pepper on top and add the red wine vinegar, and a bit of olive oil (I used about 2 tablespoons) combining well. When plating add the feta cheese and a bit more salt, pepper, olive oil if you like.
Makes 2-3 large salads or 4-6 side salads. Feel free to skip the feta for a dairy free salad.
