To Be Slowly Born

“A single event can awaken within us a stranger totally unknown to us. To live is to be slowly born.” ― Antoine de Saint-Exuper

Time of Awakening Consciousness

“It’s exhilarating to be alive in a time of awakening consciousness; it can also be confusing, disorienting, and painful.” — Adrienne Rich

Watching and experiencing awaking is not all wonderful. There are those exhilarating and blissful moments. But it can also be a time when your world is turned upside down. In fact, it can be downright scary. Lifelong beliefs may be called into question. You may even feel like you are going crazy. If you do not understand or have the language to describe what is happening it might seem to others that you are going crazy.

Fear might cause you to turn your back on what is going on and pretend it is not happening. You might not be open to using your gifts because of people you might know who have misused them. Trying to ignore an awakening will not make it go away.

Don’t be afraid of the confusing, disorienting, and painful parts of awakening. They are all part of the process. “Fear not little flock it is the Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” — Luke 12:32

The Power is Already Ours

Be Led by the Dreams

“Don’t be pushed around by the fears in your mind. Be led by the dreams in your heart.”
― Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart

Wake Up

“Jesus Christ knew he was God. So wake up and find out eventually who you really are. In our culture, of course, they’ll say you’re crazy and you’re blasphemous, and they’ll either put you in jail or in a nut house (which is pretty much the same thing). However if you wake up in India and tell your friends and relations, ‘My goodness, I’ve just discovered that I’m God,’ they’ll laugh and say, ‘Oh, congratulations, at last you found out.” ― Alan Wilson Watts, The Essential Alan Watts

The Friday Affirmation

I allow the Universe to work through me.

This is a pre-scheduled blog post that posted at 3 am. It is now just before six, but I wanted to add a personal note to today’s affirmation.

I am still learning to allow the Universe to work through me. The Universe doesn’t always set off fireworks to let us know what is ours to do. It often comes in gentle nudges that are easy to miss or ignore, but it is important that we listen and act as we are able.

As I read the affirmation this morning, I knew it was speaking to me. Last night I was going for one last walk. As I passed a friend’s house, I noticed something a little off. I kept walking but decided it was getting too dark and turned around. As I walked by the house again, I decided to stop and check. By listening to that nudge of Spirit and taking action I was able to support another neighbor who was already helping our friend.

Allowing is the important part of this affirmation. The Universe will use those who are open and will respond. I allow the Universe to work through me.

Don’t Fear the Light Within

A Time of Awakening

I chose to use awakening as our theme for October in answer to the disparaging and degrading way the term “woke” is being used to describe and discredit individuals and groups of people. Whenever I see or hear that word, I know what is coming and shudder a bit.

Let me begin by saying that awakening is a process, and I’m not sure anyone arrives to a fully awakened state. Early experiences are sometimes powerful and awe inducing, so I think sometimes it can feel that we have arrived, or sometimes we are scared to death and afraid to move forward. But as we progress, we become aware that there is always more to learn. Awakening is a personal experience and is not meant to give us feelings of superiority, but greater understanding of life, Spirit and our connection to God and each other.

Awakening is not always glorious and blissful. Don’t get me wrong, there are times when there are no words to express how wonderful it is. Direct connection to the Divine is beyond explanation. But there will also be pain and suffering as you let go of old thoughts, feelings and beliefs that may be holding you back. For years, letting go of my identity as an American Baptist was a big struggle for me. I felt forced out of the denomination I grew up in and it took years to realize I had left all that behind and was moving on. In fact, now I know I was called by Spirit out of the church and my reluctance to let go caused much of my suffering.

Please join me this month as we explore awakening. Also please feel free to share your thoughts and awakening stories.
