Life is a Balancing Act

I have learned in my own life that achieving physical, mental and spiritual balance is possible but not a once and for all kind of thing.  It is more like walking a balance beam.

If you watch a gymnast you will notice she makes subtle shifts in balance to stay on the beam.  So it is with life.

To live a balanced life we make subtle changes as required.  At first there may be very big, noticeable changes.  But as time goes on the shifts become so natural and so much a part of daily life we may not even notice them.

It Really Does Take a Village — Bonnie Estes

Don’t you get tired of hearing people claim everything they own and have accomplished is their own doing with no help from anyone?  It does take a village to raise a child and to keep adults on track.   Bonnie Estes was part of the village that raised me.

Miss Estes was my grade school principal.  She lived across the street from the school and took great pride not only in “her school,” but also in “her kids.”  While I guess you would call Miss Estes “strict” by today’s standards she was also kind.  She kept track of us long after graduation and took pride in our accomplishments.

Why do I remember Miss Estes who passed on long ago?  She taught me one woman can make a difference, and I will never forget.

An Attitude of Gratitude

Thanksgiving is approaching and this is a perfect time to stop and count our blessings and express gratitude for and to family, friends, health, material blessings, the earth, God, the Universe. Some families have a tradition of holding hands around the Thanksgiving table while each person says what they are thankful for, but an attitude of gratitude does not have to be limited to Thanksgiving.

Today I am grateful for the love and support of my wonderful best friend and husband Bob.

What are you grateful for today?

“You say grace before meals. All right. But I say grace before the concert and the opera, and grace before the play and pantomime, and grace before I open a book, and grace before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing and grace before I dip the pen in the ink.”  ~G.K. Chesterton

It’s National Deviled Egg Day!

There are many different ways of making deviled eggs and people have definite personal preferences.  At my house the filling is moist (I use an olive oil based mayo), tart (we add vinegar) and bright yellow (lots of mustard).

Our garnish of choice is paprika sprinkled over the top.  Your preference might be sliced olive, pickle or something else.  I like to use deviled eggs (and potato salad) as examples of how our thoughts, ideas and preferences are influenced by family and the community where we live.

What are deviled eggs like in your world? What about your deviled egg recipe makes it “just right” no matter what anyone else says?  Let’s talk!
