“Most people treat the present moment as if it were an obstacle that they need to overcome. Since the present moment is life itself, it is an insane way to live.” — Eckhart Tolle

12 Tips for Gluten Free Living #8: Strive to Maintain a Balanced Life

It is easy to become so concerned about one area of life that we are pulled out of balance in others.  What pulls us out of balance can be anything, including money, work, health concerns, fitness and even food.  None of these things are necessarily bad, but when any one becomes the center of our lives we miss out on the fullness of life we were created to experience.

When we are being called to learn a new way of eating and living it is so easy to become with obsessed with what we are learning or what led us to the path we are on.  It’s even possible to get caught up in focusing on sickness.  Sometimes we have to pull ourselves out of this and consciously work toward balance again.

Living in balance is not a once and for all kind of thing.  Wouldn’t it be nice if it were?  We are constantly making adjustments to stay balanced.  Think of it as walking a balance beam.  We may lose our balance and even fall off the beam from time to time, but it is important to keep trying.

“You may believe that you are responsible for what you do, but not for what you think. The truth is that you are responsible for what you think, because it is only at this level that you can exercise choice. What you do comes from what you think.” – A Course in Miracles [Source: http://www.bestspirituality.com/]

Sometimes What we Fear the Most…

… is exactly what we need to do.

I do not like to drive.  It is necessary in the part of the country where we live, but not something I consider fun.  Bob loved driving, but with his eye problems I am the only driver now.  I really don’t like driving in cities.

So when I learned I was going to need to take Bob to a city 1 1/2 hours away, (smack dab in the middle of the Ozarks) to see one of his doctors who is relocating from our small town, I was not happy.  I even dug my heels in and declared it ain’t gonna happen.

After trying to convince myself to make a trial run to at least become familiar with the road I finally decided to see if there was a church closer to our beliefs there.  I went online and found a Unity Church and Bob and I drove the 1 1/2 hours to go to church.  We found a friendly, welcoming group of people who invited us to stay for the fellowship lunch and on the way out asked if they could pray for us.

So by breaking through my fear I learned the drive is not as bad and the city not as large as I imagined.  We found a city for things we can’t find around here.  We also found a group of like minded people, something we have been missing.

So once again I learned that lesson I tend to have to repeat over and over…

Sometimes what we fear the most is exactly what we need to do.

Be Still

We live in a world where it can be extremely difficult to be still.  Every minute of the day we are being bombarded with external stimuli and constant messages to do more and be more.
I am blessed with being extremely sensitive to sensory stimuli.  No, it doesn’t always feel like a blessing when I am going into overload with sounds that are too loud, lights too bright and small movements that feel like an earthquake.  Many times it seems there is nowhere to go to escape.  Even many churches have extremely loud music and images flashing on screens.
The blessing is I know that if I do not find a quiet place to withdraw from the world and go within harm will be done to my body.  We cannot live in a constant state of sensory overload without damage being done.  The sad part if this is many people do not realize this truth.
Take time throughout the day to find stillness.  Arrive at destinations a little early.  Sit in your quiet car and focus on your breath for a few minutes.  Make time for meditation and slow, gentle focused physical activity.  Escape the noise and busyness of our modern world and just be still.  Your body, mind and spirit will thank you.
