I can and I will live a long and happy life.
Today is my 65th birthday. It is a happy birthday and I look forward to many more. I like to tell people I have plans for my 100th.
We live in an area where people come to retire. I live surrounded by people who do not share my positive outlook on birthdays and getting older. A common phrase around here is “getting old sucks.” I recently heard someone say “there’s nothing golden about the golden years.” I wish people would stop saying those kinds of things.
You see, we create our own reality with our thoughts and our words. If we believe getting old “sucks,” it will. Too many people choose that reality for their “older years.”
It helps if we develop a healthy attitude toward aging at a young age. The better we take care of our bodies and learn to accept ourselves and our bodies no matter what our age the better outcomes we can expect as we grow older.
Today is my birthday. I am 65 years young. I will still celebrate in spite of COVID. We are not going out to eat, but I am treating myself to gluten free Oreos and chocolate dipped strawberries. I will practice yoga, meditate and even do a happy dance. It’s my birthday and no matter what is going on in the world around me I choose to celebrate!
“Never limit yourself because of others’ limited imagination; never limit others because of your own limited imagination.” – Mae Jemison
“Be brave enough to live life creatively. The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. You can’t get there by bus, only by hard work and risk and by not quite knowing what you are doing. What you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you’ll discover will be yourself.” — Alan Alda![]()
“To me, all creativity is magic. Ideas start out in the empty void of your head – and they end up as a material thing, like a book you can hold in your hand. That is the magical process. It’s an alchemical thing. Yes, we do get the gold out of it but that’s not the most important thing. It’s the work itself.” ~ Alan Moore
“Now there is a final reason I think that Jesus says, “Love your enemies.” It is this: that love has within it a redemptive power. And there is a power there that eventually transforms individuals. Just keep being friendly to that person. Just keep loving them, and they can’t stand it too long. Oh, they react in many ways in the beginning. They react with guilt feelings, and sometimes they’ll hate you a little more at that transition period, but just keep loving them. And by the power of your love they will break down under the load. That’s love, you see. It is redemptive, and this is why Jesus says love. There’s something about love that builds up and is creative. There is something about hate that tears down and is destructive. So love your enemies. (from “Loving Your Enemies”)” ― Martin Luther King Jr., A Knock at Midnight: Inspiration from the Great Sermons of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Stand for what’s right. Make your life beautiful. Make your life meaningful.” –Maxime Lagacé
“Creativity is the way I share my soul with the world.” — Brene Brown
Have you noticed how expensive it can be to follow a spiritual path? In New Thought circles we tend to charge for everything including educational literature, meditation training, healing sessions, special events such as workshops, guest speakers and concerts, spiritual counseling and in some cases even prayer.
Even if you attend a more “traditional” church one of your responsibilities will be to help pay the bills which may include a mortgage on the building and salaries. It is even becoming more and more common for members to be required to pay for things like church dinners that are no longer “covered dish” or “potluck” and educational materials. Some churches even charge for children to attend Vacation Church School, excluding those whose families cannot afford to pay. And many churches of all types and varieties now have bookstores where you can buy not only books but a variety of merchandise ranging from t-shirts to prayer cards.
We have erected toll gates on the path to spiritual enlightenment, charging for access to God. What is sad about all of this is that some spiritual seekers are so desperate to find meaning in their lives they gladly pay.
But don’t worry, access to the Creator by whatever name you use is still free to all. Don’t let the toll gates stop you. You don’t have to pay to go down the road to enlightenment. Don’t worry about not saying the “right words” or doing things in the “right way.” Just open your heart to Divine love and light and trust that you will be led down the right path. And as you have freely received pass the love and light of God around.
Today I end with the words of Jesus as he sent his disciples out to minister.
7 “As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[a] drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.” Matthew 10:7-8 New International Version
