Jesus the Wayshower

“Jesus was a wayshower when it comes to self-mastery and total oneness with God.  Another recent favorite verse of mine is John 14:2 which states that “He that believeth in me, the works that I do he shall do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto the Father…” — Kandace Jones https://kandacejones.com/2012/04/06/jesus-the-wayshower/

Many Christians miss the point when it comes to the life and mission of Jesus. Many believe believing in Jesus or accepting him as your “personal Savior” is enough, bascially ignoring his example and teachings.

My theology professor in seminary used to say when discussing some of the problematic elements of Jesus life and ministry, “And that ain’t your sweet little Baptist Jesus.” Over 40 year later those words stay with me. Thank you Dr. Reist.

Are you brave enough to follow Jesus as a wayshower? It won’t be easy. We may stumble and fall short but it is important to try.

Replacing the Jesus Way

“The North American church at present is conspicuous for replacing the Jesus way with the American way.” ― Eugene H. Peterson, The Jesus Way: A Conversation on the Ways That Jesus Is the Way

We are seeing this all too clearly right now. And a warped version of the American way it is. This has led me to tears as I watch our country being torn apart, civility abandoned, people being ridiculed for being good and decent.

The time has come to make the choice. Will we follow the example set by Jesus and other wayshowers or will follow an authoritarian ruler? I hope it is not to late to make the right choice.

The Teacher You Can Trust

“The way-shower encourages all to use their gifts and be their best selves. They say, in effect, “Do not believe me—ask your inner guidance.” This is the teacher you can trust. Any teacher who teaches you to follow them—and then expects you to only follow—is still in ego and is not trustworthy.”

Wayshowing

“Wayshowing means showing others the way by simply awakening to and living your truth. By being it rather than preaching it. Leave room for people to notice the incredible shifts you are experiencing and they’ll naturally want to have what you’re having.Source Embodying Wild

Compassion to all Living Things

“Until he extends the circle of his compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace.” ― Albert Schweitzer

Loving Hopeful and Optimistic

“My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.” —Jack Layton

Path to the Dark Side

“Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.” –Yoda

As the United States moves into election season it seems appropriate to talk about fear. So why begin with a Star Wars quote? There is a lot of truth and wisdom in that movie. So let’s begin considering the words of the great Jedi Master, Yoda.

When my mother was about to complain about the state of the world she would begin with I never dreamed I would live to see this. Now I shudder when those words come to my mind. Who would have thought eight years ago a con man could take over the country and bring us to what could be the end of our democracy?

It is scary times. But above all we must control the fear.

We must all do what we can do which is to at least vote. Cast your vote. Don’t give in, don’t give up on our country and don’t let fear control you.

Continue shining the light of love out into the world. Your light is needed during these times. This month we will be focusing on the wayshowers past and present who by living their truth have guided others to do the same.

I began writing this in March, inspired by Rev. James Watson, a guest speaker at Unity of Washington D.C. Click below for this important sermon.
