The World’s Gone Crazy…

… but I’m okay.  When the world seems to be going crazy around us it is important to remember that we live in the light, love and protection or God.

Today I’m going to do something I don’t usually do.  I’m going to talk a bit about the inspiration for and creation of one of my art pieces called The World’s Gone Crazy, but I’m Okay.

I do not consider myself a quilter, but surprisingly enough I do from time to time enjoy making very traditional crazy quilts, with silks, satins, and lots of “fancy work” (my grandmother’s term for embroidery).   But sometimes my mind starts playing around with the word crazy and an art piece comes out — crazy quilt style.

This work did start with the traditional 5 sided piece of  a more traditional crazy quilt but went a little “crazy” from there.   In the center is my stylized “every human” stick figure surrounded by the words of the Prayer for Protection by James Dillet Freeman.  Outside the center the world goes crazy with pieces with raveled edges, words, embellishments and a broken binding with stray pieces of yarn hanging down to convey a world coming unraveled.

I surround myself every day with the white light of God.  I also say the “Prayer for Protection” frequently.  This is very important, especially in the middle of all the political nastiness we are experiencing in the U.S. right now.  It is also important for me, living in a community of older people, many who are experiencing physical injuries and sickness.  I also say the prayer with the word “you” for those who are suffering.   When the world seems to be going crazy around us it is important to remember that we live in the light, love and protection of God.

Sometimes we need a visual reminder of the important Truths.  Let this work remind you that no matter how, messy, unraveled or even downright crazy the world gets, we will be okay as long as we surround ourselves with the love and protection of the light of God.

This work is for sale.  Use the “Contact Us” page to let me know if you are interested.

The View from my Studio: The Walkers

Bob and I recently decided to work with Espirational as our “brand” so to speak.  That means my art blog is now closed.  We now have Espirational.com (this blog) and Espirational.org (Bob’s blog).  I will be talking about my art under the topic header of The View from my Studio.

I don’t sit in my studio eight hours a day cranking out art.  I couldn’t if I tried.  My work comes and goes along with new inspiration.  Sometimes inspiration leads to more that one finished work.  I am intrigued by Sacred Geometry — especially circles.  So I decided to play with labyrinths a little.  There may eventually be more  “Walkers,” who knows?

Sometimes Life (and Art) Gets Messy

Quilter's Burn Out Copyright 2013 by R.A. Robbins
Quilter’s Burn Out Copyright 2013 by R.A. Robbins

We all want life tied up in a pretty package with a nice bow on it don’t we?  But sometimes life gets messy.  Because art is a reflection of life art sometimes gets messy as well and that makes people uncomfortable.  We would rather look at nice controlled “pretty pictures” than stand face to face with the messiness of life.

In that messiness there is often a lesson, or even a laugh.  Todays art quilt was my answer to feeling used and abused by the art quilt show system.  I was so frustrated I actually burned a quilt.  Well I didn’t actually just set fire to it, the burning was part of the design and was done in the kitchen sink with plenty of water ready.  Burning the quilt didn’t change anything about how shows treat artists, but it did make me feel better.
