Enjoy local fairs, festivals and seasonal celebrations.
Most cities and even small towns have at least one. Whether a holiday celebration, flower, harvest or music festival, event honoring a local historical figure, Renaissance Faire or chicken festival these can be quite fun.
Some offer free admission while others charge. If you going outside prepare for weather conditions and don’t forget sunscreen. Take the family, leave the phone at home. Have fun, you are on vacation!

Visit your local college or university.
If you haven’t you may be missing:
* Your state natural history museum
* The Planetarium
* An arboretum or beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens
* Historic architecture
* Art gallery or museum
* Concerts, plays, athletic events and other activities.
Check out what your local college or university has to offer the public. Even community colleges have public activities. You might be surprised.

Have you own film festival at home in the family room.
* Rent or check out DVD’s from your local library and watch movies together.
* Provide healthy snacks and drinks and allow time for family interaction and discussion between movies.
* If you really want to have fun with this set up a red carpet and take turns “interviewing” each other. The kids will love it.

Hike or Bike on local trails.
* Get a good trail map of your area and start exploring.
* If hiking in an unfamiliar area, start with a beginner’s trail, whether you think you are a beginner or not.
* Take along water, appropriate food and sunscreen.
* Be sure you allow plenty of time to finish your hike or ride and get off the trail by sunset.

July is recognized as National Watermelon Month by proclamation of the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate.
Why not celebrate?
* Watermelon contains more Lycopene than other fresh fruits and vegetables. A 2 cup serving of watermelon averages 18.16 mg while a medium-sized tomato contains only 4 mg.
* Watermelon is an excellent source of Vitamins A and C, a good source of Vitamin B6 and naturally low in saturated fat, total fat and cholesterol.
* Plus it is so much fun to eat! You get to spit seeds.
