You who are journalists, writers, citizens, you have the right and duty to say to those you have elected that they must practice mindfulness, calm and deep listening, and loving speech. This is universal thing, taught by all religions. Thich Nhat Hanh (Related: Peace Is Every Step, Amazon book)
Today’s quote is one of those things that is worthy of being taped to the bathroom mirror. We need to read these words every day.
During these turbulent times we see people being encouraged by political and religious leaders to behave badly. Practices such as mindfulness, calm and deep listening and loving speech are being ridiculed and people who center their lives around them are called “losers.” But our divided country needs leaders who will stand for and live by these values.
As we approach an important election in the U.S. we need to remember character matters. The angry, hateful and sometimes nonsensical words coming out of former president Trump make me sad. They also leave me puzzled. How can we even consider this man as the leader of our country?
We must convey to our leaders that we expect them to practice mindfulness, calm and deep listening, and loving speech. Angry words, vitriol. lies and ridicule will not bring our country together. Those of us who follow a spiritual path must embody these practices. This is the time to shine our light.

I love that quote. What an example and wonderful reminder.
