Sometimes I will run across a quote that makes me think to myself, I should embroider that on a sampler. Sometimes I do. In fact I have several hanging around the house. The Serenity Prayer hangs in my studio.

So why put these up around the house and why embroidery? Why not just buy a poster? Positive quotes and affirmations around the house give us reminders and help us learn. If we see the words often enough they become part of us.

Another thing about the embroidery is that the time spend working with the words also helps make them real. Did you ever wonder why a teacher made you write the same sentence over and over? It wasn’t just about punishment, it was about remembering. Like this sampler next to the sink in my guest bathroom reminding me not to worry.

I choose embroidery because that is an art form I enjoy. It is restful and helps me relax. You could use any other art form you choose either done by hand or computer. The point is working with the words.

I think needlework is great Carl. I find it relaxing and as Maureen said there is a sense of accomplishment when it is done. I also turn to needlework when my mind is a muddled mess and I can’t seem to do anything else. I call it my “mindless busy work” and it does help me sort things out. I’ve done a lot of stitching in waiting rooms. There are kits available to purchase and you might be able to find a class or individual instruction in your area. I think it would be difficult to learn from a book but it could be possible. My skills are pretty basic but there are people who produce real works of art.
