It’s that time of year again. You know, when the the Southern Baptists have their annual convention and some kind of controversy gets stirred up that makes the news. This year they have chosen women in the ministry and the response has been huge.
First I want to say that God calls us all. Not necessarily to pastoral ministry, or even to other work within the church, but we all have a call to do something to further the work of the kingdom. Some are called to preach the gospel and God is an equal opportunity employer who does not discriminate based or race or gender. But unfortunately too often the church does.
I have heard the sad stories from women who were denied the right to fulfill their calling. In fact I have my own. But I can tell you that rejection by the church does not make the call go away. It never does. No matter how hard you try. It is always there.
I eventually had to learn that there are ways to serve God outside of organized religion. I am still learning that serving others, being kind, providing food, clothing and shelter to those in need, offering friendship to the friendless or even just a listening ear are all ways to serve God. So is working for justice, and for all humans to be treated with dignity. There are many out there in the world doing these things, largely unnoticed.
When I finally started discovering what my call might be, I have to admit it was disappointing. It seems to be to be kind, gentle and helpful. Basically a “nice” person. And let me tell you that is extremely difficult, especially in the world we live in. But this world desperately need kind, gentle and helpful people. And this work is not easy.
I want to close by saying “Thank You” to the women in ministry for the work they do for the kingdom. I would like to ask my readers to please join me in repeating the following blessing. We love you, we bless you, we appreciate you. We behold the Christ in you.
