Healthy Living A to Z: P is for Portion Control

It is possible to eat too much, even eating healthy food. These are two tips for controlling portions I use.

Plate size can help control how much you eat. If your dinner plates are very large, try using a salad plate. You can still have a full plate, while consuming less. Remember meals still need to be balanced and at least half of your plate should be vegetables.

Have two instead of one. When I prepare certain foods I know we will always want two. When I make muffins, I make minis so we can still have two and eat the same amount as if we ate one. I also make my salmon patties smaller so Bob can have two. He never notices they are smaller.

How do these work? These little tricks fool the brain into thinking you are eating more than you actually are. When you are finished the brain can tell the body “that’s good, we’re done.” Of course there is a scientific explanation, but it’s not as much fun.

  1. Thanks for the tips. I always say it is really not what you eat, but how much of it. I always eat to much. The first helping is for nourishment. The second is for taste. I need to practice these tips!

    1. Thanks Debbie! I love to eat. Food isn’t just about fuel for me. It’s the taste, texture, smell, sharing food with others — the whole experience. And of course I love to cook and feed others. Not politically correct I know, but what can I say. You have some great recipes. I think I’d have trouble turning away seconds at your house.

      1. What a nice compliment, thank you! I agree with you 100% about food. I was talking to someone the other day. I said food is like music. It takes you on a journey of an experience, a memory or you are could be making memories. Some dishes bring back memories every time you eat them, just as a song can do the same.

  2. This is the best diet I think… portion control…. also we can use smaller plates.. so the portion looks bigger… it is all in the mind… and we can control our mind.
